Halloween Child Safety Tips

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Milos Pesic People from all over the world often associate Halloween with fun and treats. Parents allow their children to go out and enjoy their trick and treat activities, without thinking about their childs safety to some degree. The truth is, Halloween is not just about fun and treats. Several reports have revealed that compared to the other usual nights, the Halloween nights are more dangerous to children ages 5 to 11. A large number of children were killed and injured during Halloween nights and this happens primarily because of lack of parents supervision. So what should parents do to prevent their children from getting injured at Halloween? How can they help their children have a safe and fun Halloween? There are a lot of things that parents can do for their childs safety at Halloween. To know more about the most advisable Halloween child safety strategies, just read on below some of the worth noting Halloween child safety tips that are perfect for parents, guardians and children as well. Halloween Child Safety Tips for Children: * It is a rule of thumb for small children to go only to a well-lit house and remain only on porches rather than entering the house. * It is important to engage on trick or treat activities with a number of peers with you. If possible, a small child traveling in small groups should be accompanied by an adult. * For ultimate Halloween child safety, it is best to keep and know phone numbers and carry coins or cell phone for emergency calls. * Prepare name tags with addresses and attached them to Halloween costumes. * If you are given treats, dont eat them immediately. Instead, bring them home before eating so parents can inspect them. * Use costume swords and knives that are not sharp and rigid. You can consider the flexible ones, instead. * Walk on the neighborhoods with flashlights. * Stay on sidewalks and avoid crossing yards. * If you want to cross the street, cross at the corner, not between parked cars. * Stay together in a group before crossing. * If possible, choose and wear clothing that are bright, reflective and flame retardant. * Dont wear masks for that will only obstruct your vision. Try to use face paint. * Dont wear baggy or oversized costumes to prevent tripping. Halloween Child Safety Tips for Parents: * Dont let your children age below 12 to go out at Halloween nights by themselves. For ultimate Halloween childen safety, it is best to supervise them and their outing. * Set a curfew for older children. * Prepare homes for tricks or treaters by cleaning and clearing your porches, sidewalks, and lawns. * Inspect candies and candy wrappers for safety before letting the children eat them. * Make sure that the pedestrian area is safe for trick or treaters. * If you are driving, watch for children crossing the streets. Drive safely and slowly. Those basically are the Halloween child safety tips. Just follow them and your children will surely have a fun and enjoyable Halloween experience. Living With Depression - Part Two

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Sherry L. Asbury Depression, the Next Step In my last article we talked about being depressed, clinical versus situational depression and some of the obstacles encountered when you are depressed. I have found with my struggles with depression that it is a seriously convoluted tangle of paths as you try to work your way through. Before my breakdown, I handled my depression very casually. I was used to it and dealt with it. This was not always easy, as I worked all my life and had to control my episodes so that no one noticed. After a bit of scouting around I discovered a great doctor who didnt really think depression was debilitating. She gave me Prozac and that held me for years. Each person has to find a medication and level that will work for them. Prozac may not work for you, as many other psychotropic drugs do not work for me. Then came my years with an abusive husband, homelessness, loss of all I owned and a long fall into blackness. I didnt emerge on the other side. Rather, I climbed, slip, fell back, went forward and tried again. Ten years ago I was a scurrying little creature, afraid of everything and everyone. Then of course I was in need of much different intervention. Luckily I am under the care of a wonderful Nurse Practitioner who is loving and concerned. You can find all different views by doctors about depression. Some say, Pull up your bootstraps, and get on with it. Well, I had pulled mine up around my neck and still had to struggle. There is no average, no set parameters. Depression and mental illness are very person-precise disorders. If you are in a position to need help, be very careful. Remember, no one knows you better than you. On the other hand, we can be misinformed and naive about our illness. It takes a balance with a doctor who listens to you and considers your opinions as well. It is a partnership in many ways. I find I have a very close relationship with my N.P. Keep an open mind, and check to see that they are also flexible. In my opinion, finding a medication - or learning to control emotions without meds - is a delicate dance on a high wire. Remember that most drugs take time to work themselves into your system. It wont bring relief right on the spot, and may mean several changes of medication until you find one that works the best. Be patient and willing to work with your doctor. Personally, I have not found that I can go without medication. It was a very difficult decision for me, as my husband was a drug addict and I had a horror of drugs. But, for my well-being I tried many - eventually ending up back with Prozac, which seems to a good route for me. One thing I am very decisive about is the stigma of depression and mental illness. When you have a broken leg with a nifty cast, everybody signs it and its good for a stretch of sympathy. But when you have a broken mind - no one can see it, and so they assume whatever comes to their mind. You have a right to be depressed and mentally ill. It is nothing you can change with the brush of a magic wand. The best you can do is be realistic about your situation and help yourself as much as possible. In my next article we will talk about living sane in an insane world. Growing Azaleas

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Erin Taylor For years Azaleas have had the reputation of being a hard to grow plant, and many years ago they probably were. With the abundance of information available to us today allowing us to have access to the latest growing techniques for any plant we want to grow, we tend to forget that our great- grandparents, and even our grandparents often had to learn their growing techniques by trial and error, and a lot of plants that had particular soil, light, or food requirements were more often than not, put into the difficult or hard to grow category. That reputation has unfortunately stuck with them over the years. Azaleas are not hard to grow. As with a lot of other plants there are a few rules that must be followed to create the right growing conditions, but once established azaleas are very easy to look after. Azaleas come in a wide range of colours , white, pink, red, purple, orange and yellows, as well as many multi-colours. Theres single and double flower varieties, there are varieties with tiny insignificant flowers but popular because of their deeply coloured leaves. All of them are beautiful plants worthy of a place in any garden, but the single flower varieties are the hardiest and more suited to sunny positions, but they do have a more limited colour range than the doubles. The first thing to do is decide where in your garden you want to grow your azalea plants. If you are planting into the ground, try to find areas on the South and East side of your home, where they will be more protected from very hot sun. When selecting the areas keep in mind that the single flower azaleas are more sun tolerant, but still need to be protected from the very hot sun, and doubles will always need to have moderate shade. Azaleas will not tolerate alkaline soil and prefer a rich acidic soil with a PH level from 5-6.PH test your soil, if you live in an area where the soil is naturally high alkaline, then you may need to consider growing your plants in tubs or pots. PH testers can be purchased from nurseries and hardware stores, theyre inexpensive but a valuable tool to have. Once youve decided where youre going to plant your azaleas, and you know the PH of the soil, the next important step is to dig the area over really well, you need to add plenty of peat moss, leaf mould or other organic matter like well rotted cow manure to increase the soil acidity as well as to increase the moisture holding capacity of the soil. The roots of azaleas need to be kept cool and moist, but not wet, which means youll need to ensure that the soil drainage in the area you’ve chosen, is very good. In heavy soil its a good idea to dig in plenty of Gypsum or a good clay breaker, although a safer alternative is to build raised beds and fill them with a good loam that has the correct PH level. If you are planting into tubs or containers, most nurseries can supply you with a good draining potting mixture thats been prepared for Azaleas. Because drainage is so important it, makes sense to check the hole at the bottom of your pots once or twice a year to make sure it isnt blocked by roots, insects or other debris. Pots or containers should always be raised off the ground on bricks or feet to ensure all the excess water drains away from the soil. Once you’ve prepared the garden areas or pots, its time to buy your azaleas. Before purchasing your chosen plants check them closely to make sure they look healthy. Gently tip them out of the pots to make sure that the roots are forming nicely, just because one has strong roots, doesnt mean they all have. So you need to check them all. Plants are often sold with very few roots, or before the roots have properly established in the pot. Also make sure that the soil your azalea is potted in is moist, not wet, and definitely not dry. Azaleas should never be allowed to dry out. Although Azaleas dont have many problems with pests and diseases, they can sometimes be attacked by fungal diseases such as Petal Blight, which destroys the blooms. The symptoms of petal blight are light brown or whitish circular spots on the petals. The spots then spread until they look like watery blotches and the flower starts to collapse. The petals look and feel slimy and eventually the diseased flowers dry up and cling to the plant, most gardeners just pick off the dead flowers and throw them away, but the problem is easy to control and cure with the use of a systemic fungicide which can help prevent any further infection. The best way to avoid any problems is to examine any plants you are buying and make sure there are no signs of an infection before you take them home. Garden fungicides are readily available from garden centres. If you are concerned that your plant is suffering from any disease, take a small sample to your nursery person. Most garden centre staff will gladly help you. Azaleas are shallow rooted, so when youre transferring them from the nursery pot to the garden or another container, be sure not to plant them any deeper than the pot you purchased them in. Also when you refill the soil back into the hole and round the root ball, the soil should be pushed down firmly, but not packed down hard, which can restrict air flow around the roots, and makes it harder for any water to penetrate the soil. Another common mistake is to pack the soil into the hole to loosely, what happens then is when the soil begins to settle, the roots of the plants become exposed, allowing them to dry out, and that can result in the premature death of your plant. The best time to plant azaleas is when they are in flower, this also gives you the opportunity to choose the colours you prefer. If you make it a habit to remove dead flower heads you can keep your plants flowering and looking spectacular for weeks.Azalea roots need to be protected from the summer heat, and the best way to do this is to cover the soil around them with a thick layer of mulch, and keep them moist. The amount of water needed will depend on the type of soil they are planted into and their exposure to the elements. Azaleas should never be allowed to dry out.Taking precautions and looking after the health of your azalea plants rewards you well. Gardens or tubs with azaleas in full bloom is a sight to behold. Considered Getting a VA Home Loan?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_G._Edwards]John G. Edwards Military personnel who are classified as veterans, in active duty or service, or reservists may be qualified for the VA home loan program under the Department of Veterans Affairs. The problem is that most of them are not aware of the home loan that they fail to avail of such benefit. The VA home loan became possible by virtue of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act which became a law during the time of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The law provided GIs or veterans the benefit of applying for home loans without the initial payment commonly known as down. The law received praises not only from those in the service but also from other sectors because it made the dream of every American, including the military personnel, to own a home a reality. The law not only responded to a pressing need among this sector but it also provided impetus to the construction industry of the country. Most veterans and personnel are not really capable of building or buying their own homes because of financial constraints. Aside from the burden of paying a down payment for a regular home loan, there is also the problem of paying the monthly insurance fees. Under the law, veterans or service personnel who have rendered at least 90 days of service during wartime and at least 181 days of continuous service during peace time are qualified for the home loan provided they have been honorably discharged from the service. The 2002 law increasing the guarantee on VA home loans to sixty thousand dollars means that those who are eligible for the home loan can now avail of a higher loan amount since most lenders allow them to borrow an amount that is about 400 percent than the guaranteed amount of home loan. The increase in the amount of VA home loan guarantee is favorable to those who are eyeing housing units in the Washington and California areas considering that these areas have higher housing costs. Veterans and servicemen in California who want to own a home should avail of the easy VA home loan application programs being offered by some mortgage lenders. These programs are being offered to encourage veterans and servicemen to avail of the VA home loan program the cost effective way. This program translates to very low interest rates of only 6.60 percent for a thirty year VA home loan program. The VA home loans offered in California also varies as the applicants can finance any type of residence like single, condominiums or even portable homes or vans. Most loan agencies in California offer as much as a $521 thousand home loan. If this is not enough, this can be augmented by availing of a second home loan which is also allowed by some lenders. Plus, applicants of home loans that have been guaranteed by the VA are no longer required to pay the down payment for the home loan. Veterans and servicemen who have been honorably discharged from the service and who want to avail of a home loan program in California should choose lenders that offer low rates and transaction fees. It is also not required that the applicants be residents of California prior to their VA home loan applications. It also does not matter where they served in the military. Any veteran or service man is eligible provided they are willing to buy or build a home in California. The increase in the guarantee amount for VA home loans in California may be due to the fact that California is among the two States in America that requires more veteran homes. Thanks to the enactment of the Veterans Home Bond Act of 2000, additional funds for the construction of new homes for veterans in the Ventura, Lancaster, Fresno, Redding and West Los Angeles areas have been made available, The same law specified that new veterans homes be constructed in Ventura and Lancaster California offers a sunny weather not only for those who want to have fun but also for veterans who want to live peacefully and serenely in their own homes. By availing of the VA home loans, any qualified veteran can now start getting used to the good life in California. John G. Edwards is a consultant that has helped many people with their finances. 7 Tips for Beautiful Skin

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Monique Hawkins For most women, part of their morning and evening routines involve a skincare regimen of applying creams, moisturizers, tonics, lotions, and the like. Why do women put themselves through this? To combat the signs of aging, and to maintain youthful looks and beautiful skin! However, how many women consider what is in the products they are using? Some women probably do not realize that what they are putting on their skin may actually be undermining what they are trying to prevent to begin with. In fact the average woman puts twelve products on her skin daily, most of which maintain harmful chemical preservatives. Dr. Myron Wentz, founder and chairperson of USANA Health Sciences has this to say about beauty in the June/July 2005 issue of the “USANA Health Sciences” magazine: “Some say that beauty is only skin deep. Nonsense! I believe that true beauty is a reflection of true health, and true health begins deep inside each and every cell in the body. But true health and true beauty have an outer component, which is why we require protection from environmental insults such as solar radiation, pollutants in our environment and the drying effects of air. . . The fact is, you simply cannot contain a healthy body if your skin isn’t healthy. And your skin can’t be healthy if your are subjecting it to toxic substances that are ultimately absorbed into your body.” So, what can women do? How can they combat environmental pollutants, the affect of solar radiation, and the drying effects of air? How can they be sure they are using the very best products on their skin so they can be healthy inside and out? Here are 7 tips to assist in this process: 1. Be very aware of what is in skincare products. Use products that are all natural as much as possible. 2. Look for products that contain Dermal Surface Renewal Technology. DSR smoothes away existing signs of aging such as laugh lines, crows feet, and dullness. 3. Use products that have regenisomes. Regenisomes penetrate the skin to speed cell renewal after sun exposure. They also use the light of photosomes to undo sun damage, and have ultrasomes to renew skin while sleeping. 4. Find products with Proteo-C and Proflavonol-T. These two vitamins protect the skin from premature aging caused by the sun, pollution, and other environmental factors. They also provide advanced nutrition to the skin to keep it appearing smooth and firm. 5. If possible, use products that are paraben free. Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives that are widely used in personal care products such as shampoos, conditioners, hair styling products, make-up, facial masks, skin lotions and creams, and deodorants. They also are typically found in baby lotions, shampoos, and other personal care products for infants and children. In addition, parabens are in many foods and pharmaceutical products. Researchers are beginning to find parabens in benign and malignant human breast tumors. While some studies have challenged their toxicity in many products and question their long term affect on humans, using products that are paraben free can eliminate the risk of exposure to this harmful chemical. 6. Drink plenty of water! Water hydrates skin and hair as well as flushes toxins out of the body. 7. Limit stress or learn to manage it effectively. Stress is harmful both emotionally and physically. Find that stress reliever activity that works best and use it on a daily basis! Follow the above 7 tips to true beauty and health. Two First Communion Party Games for Kids

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Gail Leino The First Communion is a special time when your child really begins to take part in the responsibilities and rules of your religion and some First Communion party games will lighten the tension. You may even want to mark the occasion by throwing a small party, so why not include a couple of fun First Communion party games? Kids Crab Football: This fun activity makes a great choice for the First Communion Party Games because it will help to burn off pent up energy from the more solemn events you had scheduled earlier. It also lets everyone get out of their special occasion clothes and relax a bit. For this First Communion party game youll need a large beach ball and lots of space for the kids to move around in. Crab Football is just like regular soccer except the ball is larger and the players have to walk like crabs. You know how, right? Just bend over like you are going to do a back flip and scuttle around on your hands and feet. Animal Scavenger Hunt: For this indoor or outdoor appropriate First Communion party game have the party divide into groups of three or four. Have each group choose an animal they want to pretend to be and make the adult in the group the Shepard. At the start of the game you will give the kids in each of the groups a list of hidden items you placed around the party area. The Shepards will all stay in the First Communion party games area while the animals all go out searching for missing items. When a player finds an item they must call to the Shepard by making animal calls. The Shepard will recognize their players because the calls will be similar to the sounds made by their chosen animal. The Shepard will follow the sounds to their teammate and will get the missing item from the player and return to the First Communion party games area, while the animal continues on the hunt to find more scavenger items. Those at the end of the hunt with the most items are the winners. Youll find that the kids and the adults at your First Communion party games have plenty of good old fun. Just take a little time out for the fun to start and youll have more than you can handle. Love Success Stories After a Romance Scam (1)

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Alan Prince Jane (not real name) is a forty-seven year-old lady, divorced, living in Austin, Texas. She has three grown-up children, who are all married. In 2006, she lost some thousands of dollars to a scammer from Nigeria. She refused to be deterred by this experience and again signed up with one of the popular dating sites to get a probable date. She also joined some online groups in order to meet and make friends. It was on one of such sites that she met Dave (not real name), a forty something year old man living in Abuja, Nigeria. They seemed to get on well, and began to communicate with each other regularly. What struck her most was the fact that he was very plain with her, and told her all she wanted to know. He made no pretences and made no false claims, as scammers typically do.Months later, she came to Nigeria and they got married. And from all indications, they really love each other. This time around, not one dollar of hers got missing neither was she asked to cough up any money or any such thing that scammers normally do to get money from their victims. At long last, Jane was able to successfully put the sad episode of the scam behind her and find her lover. This is a true story as told me by Jane herself. If you have been scammed or you are scared because of someone who has had the experience, you also can still find true love on the Internet, even from Nigeria, if that is what you want. You should not because of one bad experience shut out every new opening or opportunity that comes your way for getting a date. Jane chose to still date, even with her experiences. She decided to learn from what had happened to her, and move on.By now, she had enough experience to prevent anyone from scamming her again, and as such she had her eyes open wide. Scams do happen, but love also happens too. And more and more people are finding love by the day. You can also find your own love today, if you are willing to take the risk. Alan Prince writes from his interactions with hundreds of men and women who have been through the romance or dating scams. How To Put Together A Promotional Campaign When You Are Not Using A PR (Or Other Marketing) Agency

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Loretta MacInnes The first thing you need to do is put together a promotional brief. It is just as important to prepare this for yourself as it is if you are planning to use a third party, such as a PR agency. This brief should form the basis of the campaign- it should include the relevant Ws- Why, What, Who, Where. You also need to think about the How as well. If your campaign is going to be successful, you need to think about what you are trying to achieve, and apply good old fashioned common sense. You can of course be extremely creative in how you go about your campaign, but in order for it to be successful, you have to think carefully about what you want to achieve. Some of the relevant points to cover in a Promotional Campaign brief are outlined below: a) What is it that you are promoting? b) What response do you want to get from the target (e.g. do you want a sale, or an expression of interest, or contact details etc.?) c) What response level do you need to achieve in order to make the promotional activity worthwhile? d) How targeted is your mailing list? (the more highly targeted, the greater your level of response will be) e) When do you need responses by? f) Who will handle your responses/ answer queries? g) How will you follow-up your responses i) when people reply positively, or negatively, to your promotion? ii) if levels of response are not as high as expected? h) What image are you trying to get across through your promotion? The next thing to think about is how you are going to get your message to your target audience. Types of questions to pose yourself when thinking about your target audience may include: a) Who you are actually wanting to target? b) What are their likes and dislikes likely to be? c) Does your audience have a particular interest in common? d) Does your audience fall into a particular age range? The answers to this type of question should help you think about the ways your audience access information, and may provide some specific channels for you to get your message to them. There are numerous channels you could use to get your message to an audience and the range of channels is changing rapidly with the developments in technology, the internet, mobile technologies etc. Selecting the correct one(s) is key to a successful campaign. By understanding your audience, what you are wanting to say to them, the response you wish to evoke and constraints such as the amount of money you have to spend, how much time you can spend responding, how much stock you wish to sell etc., you should be able to make wise choices in your channel selection. Channels may include: a) A website b) A Blog c) An E-Zine d) An email e) A specialist interest magazine f) A club newsletter g) A flyer h) Television i) Radio j) Local press k) Regional Press l) National press m) A poster n) Direct mailers o) Telephone calls Once you have selected the appropriate channels, you need to think about how to best use the channel: a) Press releases i) A well written press release may stimulate interest cross-media. As well as the press release being published either as submitted, or as an edited version, you may also stimulate further editorial. The drawback is that you cannot control how a press release will be used. Your content may be edited (if used at all), and you have no influence on where or when it is placed.b) Editorial (Content). i) You can create your own editorial by writing articles for magazines, e-zines, newspapers etc ii) You can contact journalists directly and gain agreement for a third party to write editorial. If you decide on this course of action, it’s important to do your research and target journalists who will be interested in what you have to say. Also make sure that you have something really interesting to generate their desire to cover your story.c) Advertisement. Totally controllable. You state what information is to be put in the ad, the size, the position, and the response details. If you want to place an advert, think carefully about the publications you could choose. Is your audience tightly targeted and so likely to read specific specialist titles, or is your local paper going to be more relevant? How many responses will you need to pay for the advert? Is this realistically achievable? d) Content on web site. You should be able to control the information, where and how it is placed. If you update the information yourself, you can control a steady flow of information to your audience that fits in well with your business. It will probably be useful to make time for follow up to your campaign if you find that you need to boost your response rate Make sure that you get your customers permission to retain their information on your database, as appropriate. This will be extremely useful for future campaigns. Evaluation measures a) Reference responses by, for example, putting a reference code on any advertising materials. Collate sources/ reference codes upon receipt of responses (if response is via the telephone ask the respondent how they found out about the event). Record these responses in the event file under campaign evaluation.
